Gary L. Brewer joined Robert A.M. Stern Architects in 1989 and has been a Partner in the firm since 2008. His responsibilities have involved the design and administration of various institutional, hospitality, and residential projects. He is co-author of the monograph Designs for Living: Houses by Robert A.M. Stern Architects (Monacelli, 2014) and Designs for Learning: College and University Buildings by Robert A.M. Stern Architects (New York: Monacelli, 2016). 

Mr. Brewer is currently at work on mixed-use projects in Charleston, South Carolina, for Greystar, Lifestyle Communities, Geyer Morris, and Evening Post Industries; a hotel, conference center, and golf clubhouse on Kiawah Island, South Carolina; Dundon-Berchtold Hall at the University of Portland; and a house in Virginia Beach. 

His university work includes the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia; the Spangler Campus Center at the Harvard Business School, Boston, Massachusetts; the renovation and expansion of Ozark Hall at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville; the Ernest F. Hollings National Advocacy Center and West Campus Residence Quadrangle at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina; and the Fitness and Aquatics Center at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. 

His residential work includes the 1994 Life magazine Dream House, which has sold over 3,000 house plans. He was also Project Architect for This Old House magazine's 1998 Dream House, which was featured for one year for its design and construction process. Custom-designed houses include residences in Seaside, Florida; Westport, Connecticut; Kiawah Island, South Carolina; Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts; and East Quogue, New York; and speculative houses in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, New York. 

Mr. Brewer's work has been published in Architectural Record, Architectural Digest, The New York Times, Life Magazine, This Old House, Ocean Home, Cottages & Gardens, and The Classicist.  Mr. Brewer has lectured extensively on traditional house design, the history of pattern book houses, and New York City clubs. He is a Fellow Emeritus and Board Member of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, Co-Chair of the ClassicistCommittee, and has led the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art's traditional house design seminars for the American Institute of Building Designers in Florida, Virginia, Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Mr. Brewer served on juries for the 2009 Residential Architects Design Awards program, the 2011 Philip Trammell Shutze Awards, the 2011 John Staub Awards, the 2011 AIA New Jersey Design Awards, and the 2013 and 2014 Connecticut Cottages & Gardens Innovation in Design Awards. His projects have won a variety of awards including a Palladio Award in 2015 for the renovation and expansion of Ozark Hall at Arkansas University, an ICAA New England Bulfinch Award in 2016 for the Nelson Fitness Center and Smith Swim Center at Brown University, and an AIA Long Island Chapter Award in 2017 for a Residence in East Quogue. Two of Mr. Brewer’s projects in Charleston, Courier Square and the Line Street Development, were honored by the Congress for the New Urbanism with a Charter Award in 2019.

Mr. Brewer received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Minnesota in 1984. He is a registered architect in the State of New York and other jurisdictions and a member of the American Institute of Architects.
