Apprentice Program
The Guild promotes the creation of better places through the use of traditional patterns of architecture and urbanism. We believe in those patterns because they represent wisdom that comes from the experiences of many people over time. The primary purpose of the Guild is to continue to evolve the patterns as well as pass them down to other practitioners. The Guild created the Apprentice Program to facilitate the passing down of knowledge between members of the Guild and those who aspire to become members of the Guild.
Process
In order to become an apprentice, you must submit an application that explains what you want to accomplish during your apprenticeship over the next year (through the next Congress for the New Urbanism). Your application will be shared with members of the Guild who have expressed an interest in serving as a mentor (if you haven’t already collaborated with a prospective mentor directly). If a member agrees to serve as your mentor (and you are willing to work with the mentor), the two of you will discuss your apprenticeship plan and update it with a detailed schedule.
Expectations
As an apprentice, you must craft the application/plan, keep track of your progress on your plan, initiate communication with your mentor, and do the work. The mentor’s primary responsibility is to serve as a guide/teacher that will help you along the way. Apprentices are expected to get to know the other apprentices via an apprentice-only google discussion group (or other media format of their choosing) and by attending the next Congress for the New Urbanism where you can connect with other apprentices as well as members.
Membership
The Apprentice Program is not the formal mechanism for becoming a member of the Guild, but it is intended to serve as the primary gateway to membership because of the relationships that are formed and the fact that the work you do pursuant to the program will showcase your talents and commitment to the mission of the Guild.
Apprentice Application
Your apprentice application shall include the following information:
• Contact Information: name, e-mail address and mobile phone number
• Education: schools and degrees earned
• Experience: jobs with titles and dates of employment
• Apprentice Plan: explanation of what you want to accomplish; how you currently expect to accomplish
your goal; why you are interested in this goal; and how a mentor can help you.
If you aren’t sure what you want to accomplish at this time, but you are still interested in being an apprentice, please e-mail us and we can set up a time when we can discuss potential initiatives that might interest you.
